Floating, Trunnion-Mounted & Actuated Ball Valves for Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Energy and Process Applications.
BALL VALVES

Ball Valves for Reliable Process Isolation.
Avasi Energy supplies industrial ball valves in Sabah and Malaysia, supporting isolation requirements across oil & gas, petrochemical, energy and process industries.
Our sourcing scope covers floating and trunnion-mounted ball valves, from general industrial isolation duties to project-specific API valve requirements, manual operation and complete actuated valve packages.
Each enquiry is reviewed against the specified valve design, size, pressure class, body and trim materials, bore, seat construction, end connection, service conditions, actuation, testing and documentation requirements.
Based in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Avasi Energy works with suitable valve manufacturers and supply partners in Malaysia and internationally to coordinate ball-valve requirements according to customer datasheets, material requisitions and project specifications.
FAST ISOLATION. POSITIVE SHUT-OFF.
Quarter-Turn Flow Isolation.
A ball valve uses a bored spherical closure element that rotates through approximately 90 degrees between the open and closed positions.
When aligned with the piping bore, flow passes through the valve. When rotated to the closed position, the solid portion of the ball isolates the flow path.
- Ball valves are widely selected for applications requiring:
- Fast On-Off Operation
- Reliable Isolation
- Relatively Low Flow Restriction in Suitable Full-Bore Designs
- Compact Quarter-Turn Operation
- Manual or Automated Operation
The exact valve design must still be matched to the actual service conditions.
The right ball valve starts with the isolation duty — not just the size and class.
FLOATING OR TRUNNION-MOUNTED?
Two Fundamental Ball Valve Designs.
Floating Ball Valves
Compact, Proven Isolation for Suitable Applications.
In a floating ball valve, the ball is supported by the valve seats rather than mechanically anchored at both ends.
Under pressure, the ball can move slightly toward the downstream seat, contributing to the sealing action.
Depending on the manufacturer and application, configurations may include:
- One-Piece
- Two-Piece
- Three-Piece
- Flanged Ends
- Threaded Ends
- Socket-Weld Ends
- Butt-Weld Ends
- Full or Reduced Bore
- Manual or Actuated Operation
Floating ball valves are commonly used across industrial and process applications within the size, pressure, material and service limits of the selected design.
Trunnion-Mounted Ball Valves
Engineered for Demanding Isolation Duties.
In a trunnion-mounted design, the ball is mechanically supported by trunnions or bearings, while the seats move toward the ball to provide sealing.
This construction is widely applied in larger sizes, higher-pressure systems and demanding oil & gas or pipeline applications.
Depending on manufacturer design and project specification, requirements may include:
- Side-Entry Construction
- Top-Entry Construction
- Fully Welded Construction
- Full or Reduced Bore
- Soft or Metal Seats
- Flanged / Butt-Weld / Project-Specified Ends
- Manual or Actuated Operation
MIR Valve’s current API 6D portfolio, for example, offers side-entry, top-entry and fully welded trunnion ball valves with full/reduced bore, soft/metal seats and manual or actuated configurations for onshore, offshore and subsea duties. Mir Valve
FLOATING VS TRUNNION
The Design Must Match the Duty.
| Requirement | Floating Ball Valve | Trunnion-Mounted Ball Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Ball support | Ball supported through seat arrangement | Ball mechanically supported |
| Common positioning | General industrial / suitable process isolation | Larger size, higher pressure and demanding applications |
| Operating torque | Design dependent | Trunnion support can assist with larger/high-pressure designs |
| Body configurations | One, two or three-piece | Side-entry, top-entry, fully welded and others |
| Actuation | Manual or actuated | Manual or actuated |
| Selection basis | Service, size, class, material | Service, size, class, pipeline/project requirements |
This is not a “good versus better” comparison.
The correct design follows the service conditions and project specification.
FULL BORE OR REDUCED BORE?
The Flow Path Matters.
Full Bore
A full-bore ball valve is designed with an internal flow passage intended to closely correspond to the adjoining piping bore according to the governing valve standard and manufacturer design.
Full-bore valves may be required where the piping system calls for minimal internal restriction or, in certain pipeline designs, pigging capability.
Pigging suitability should be confirmed against the actual valve design and project requirements rather than assumed solely from the phrase “full bore”.
Reduced Bore
A reduced-bore ball valve uses a smaller internal passage through the ball.
This can offer a more compact or economical valve solution where the resulting restriction and pressure loss are acceptable to the process design.
API 608 specifically recognises full-bore and reduced-bore metal ball-valve configurations, while API 6D ball-valve manufacturers also offer both arrangements.
Bore selection should follow the piping and process requirement — not preference alone.
SOFT SEATED OR METAL SEATED?
Seat Construction Changes the Application.
Soft-Seated Ball Valves
Soft-seat designs use polymeric or other engineered non-metallic seating materials.
Depending on the selected material and valve design, they can provide tight shut-off for many general hydrocarbon, gas and industrial process applications.
Seat-material selection must consider:
- Process Fluid
- Temperature
- Pressure
- Chemical Compatibility
- Operating Frequency
- Project Leakage Requirements
Metal-Seated Ball Valves
Metal-to-metal seating may be specified for demanding services involving conditions such as:
- Elevated Temperature
- Abrasive Media
- Erosive Service
- Solids
- Severe Cycling
- Project-Specific Severe-Service Requirements
The exact suitability depends on manufacturer design, coating/hard-facing technology, leakage acceptance and service conditions.
Avasi Energy sources the seat design specified by the customer’s engineering requirement rather than presenting one seat construction as universally superior.
BODY CONSTRUCTION
Different Designs for Different Maintenance & Installation Requirements.
For trunnion and engineered ball valves, the body configuration can form an important part of the project requirement.
Side-Entry Ball Valves
Bolted side-entry designs allow the body to be disassembled after removal from the piping system where supported by the manufacturer design.
Top-Entry Ball Valves
Top-entry designs provide access to internal components from the upper body area and may be selected where in-line maintenance philosophy forms part of the project specification.
Fully Welded Ball Valves
Fully welded body construction eliminates conventional bolted body joints and is often associated with selected pipeline, underground or long-term buried-service applications.
Final selection should follow project design and maintenance philosophy.
END CONNECTIONS
The Valve Must Match the Piping System.
Depending on ball-valve design and application, end connections may include:
- Raised-Face Flanged — RF
- Ring-Type Joint — RTJ
- Butt-Weld Ends — BW
- Socket-Weld Ends — SW
- Threaded Ends
- Hub / Special Connections, where specified
The connection must align with:
- Piping Class
- Flange Standard
- Pipe Schedule / Wall
- Pressure Rating
- Material
- Installation Requirement
For butt-weld valves, end preparation and transition requirements should be reviewed against the connecting pipe specification.

- Speed Controls
- Local Control Panel, where specified
- Tubing & Fittings, where specified
- Emergency Shutdown Accessories, where applicable
Actuator sizing should be based on the valve manufacturer’s torque data, differential pressure, operating conditions, required safety factor, operating time and fail position.
DBB, DIB & SEAT ARRANGEMENTS
Specify the Required Isolation Philosophy.
For selected trunnion-mounted and pipeline ball valves, project specifications may require particular seat and isolation arrangements.
These may include terminology such as:
- Self-Relieving Seats
- Double Piston Effect Seats
- Double Block & Bleed — DBB
- Double Isolation & Bleed — DIB
The terminology should be applied according to the governing standard and actual valve design.
Different seat arrangements can behave differently with respect to body-cavity pressure and isolation performance, so don’t treat “DBB” and “DIB” as marketing synonyms.
Where these functions are required, the enquiry should clearly state the project specification and required seat arrangement.
BODY, BALL, STEM & SEAT MATERIALS
Material Selection Extends Beyond the Valve Body.
Depending on service conditions, ball-valve materials may include:
Carbon Steel
- Common for oil & gas and general process applications.
Low-Temperature Carbon Steel
- Where low-temperature toughness requirements apply.
Stainless Steel
- For selected corrosive process applications.
Duplex & Super Duplex Stainless Steel

The complete material requirement may include separate specifications for:
- Body
- Closure / Ball
- Stem
- Seats
- Seat Retainers
- Bolting
- Seals / O-Rings
- Packing
- Wetted Trim
Body material alone does not define the complete valve metallurgy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between a floating and trunnion ball valve?
A floating ball is supported through the valve's seat arrangement, while a trunnion-mounted ball is mechanically supported. Trunnion designs are widely used for larger, higher-pressure and demanding oil & gas applications, although final selection depends on the manufacturer design and project specification.
What is the difference between full bore and reduced bore?
A full-bore valve provides a larger internal flow path aligned more closely with the piping bore, while a reduced-bore valve has a smaller internal passage. Selection depends on pressure-loss, process and piping requirements.
Does full bore automatically mean piggable?
No. Where pigging is required, the complete valve bore geometry and manufacturer's design should be confirmed against the project pigging requirement.
What is the difference between API 6D and API 608 ball valves?
API 6D addresses applicable pipeline and piping valves, while API 608 specifically covers metal ball valves for petroleum, petrochemical and industrial applications with defined end-connection and pressure-class scope. The applicable standard should follow the project specification.
Can Avasi supply fire-safe ball valves?
Yes, where specified. Avasi can source valves with applicable fire-test qualification such as API 607 or other project-specified requirements, subject to manufacturer certification.
Can Avasi supply DBB or DIB ball valves?
Yes, where required. The exact seat arrangement and isolation requirement must be defined by the project specification because DBB and DIB are not interchangeable terms.
Can Avasi supply actuated ball valves?
Yes. Avasi can coordinate pneumatic, electric, hydraulic and selected specialist actuator packages through suitable manufacturers and integration partners.
Can Avasi arrange FAT and third-party inspection?
Yes. FAT, TPI and project-specific testing can be coordinated where required and included within the agreed supply scope.
